Five years after the publication of Pope Francis’ Encyclical letter on the “care for our common home”, representatives of European Bishops’ Conferences, as well as Catholic organisations and movements, held in Brussels the Third European Laudato Si’ Reflection Day on Thursday 28 May 2020.
Leading economist Mariana Mazzucato, the Secretary of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development of the Vatican Monsignor Bruno-Marie Duffé and members of the European Parliament, Patrizia Toia (S&D) and Lukas Mandl (EPP) took part in the discussion. The event is organized by European Laudato Si’ Alliance (ELSiA) is a group of Catholic organisations that are joining forces in Europe to promote climate and social justice, highly inspired by the Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’ of Pope Francis.
Can we heal together?” – “Laudato Si’ offers a path […] finding solutions for our common future.” Josiane CIDSE (Secretary General of CIDSE and Co-chair of ELSIA) moderates offering interesting inputs for discussion during the Webinar of the 3rd Laudato Si Reflection day organized by the European Laudato Si Alliance.
Prof. Mariana Mazzucato pointed out that notion of ‘common good’ needs a new focus. Laudato Si’ Encyclical sheds light on the important values. “[…] reimagination value, creating together, bringing together social, economic and environmental factors […] Away from the notion that only things that have a price are valuable.”
Monsignor Bruno-Marie Duffé introduced the idea of a new pedagogy for development. The third lesson from Laudato Si’ inspires us to shift from the technological paradigm to a new vision with the knowledge and experience opened to solidarity to build a Common Home.”

MEP Lukas Mandl focused on the Common Good as a concept part of the Social Catholic Thinking. “We have the SDGs as a framework of the coalition of the willing and the Laudato Si’ five mentions sustainability: Human dignity, regional stability, a healthy planet, fair and resilient societies, and prosperous economies.”
