Climate Change & Climate Migration: A Humanitarian, Justice, Security or Economic Challenge?
Date: Tuesday 24 June 2025
Time: 18:30–20:30, welcome refreshments and light food (event starts at 19:00)
Location: St. Winifried’s Church, Sträßchensweg 3, Bonn and on-line (through Zoom) – 8-min walk from the World Conference Center Bonn, where the Bonn Climate Meetings take place.
Climate change is forcing unprecedented displacement. Research warns that rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, and environmental degradation will displace millions, possibly billions, by mid-century in many regions in the Global South. Yet international response remains inadequate, with insufficient efforts towards emissions reduction, adaptation funding, and loss and damage compensation. This displacement poses direct security and economic risks to the Global North as well.
Join us for insights on climate migration’s entry into COP debates. Our expert speakers, Dr Jörg Alt SJ (migration sociologist and climate activist) and Dr Samuel Zewdie Hagos (forced migration researcher at DeZIM), will explore promising avenues for elevating these issues in climate negotiations and examine how growing awareness of Global North risks might catalyse stronger mitigation and adaptation efforts. We’ll discuss current research, early displacement signs, and institutional responses.
Registration here (attendance is free but registration is required – a zoom link will be sent to those registering for the online participation)
