Climate Justice

“We have to realise that a true ecological approach always becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.” – Pope Francis, Laudato Si’ (49).

Climate Justice is the belief that every person has a right to a healthy environment and should not be disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change. JESC thrives to pursue the cause of climate justice through serving along various Jesuit, Catholic and other non-faith based networks, and working towards the success of high level climate change policy.

As a founding member of ELSiA we work towards influencing European Policy on climate issues alongside other Catholic organisations. JESC leads the ELSiA working group on Eco-Praxis which encourages the response of grassroots organisations to the climate crisis, and is also a member of ELSiA’s working group on Advocacy.

JESC actively takes part in two Global Ignatian Advocacy Networks (GIAN). Our engagement with GIAN Ecology assists the promotion of ecology as a priority of the Society of Jesus, especially on the international stage such as the COP conferences, which set and monitor international climate targets. As a member of the network for Justice in Mining, JESC assists in raising awareness of the need for a just transition when it comes to raw materials.
