We are pleased to share a new policy paper from the Future Generations Initiative, European Union Law for Future Generations: what, why and how?, authored by Katalin Sulyok (Durham University) and Béla Kuslits (JESC).
The paper outlines how Intergenerational Fairness can be embedded in EU governance as the Commission prepares its first EU Strategy on the topic. It explains the legal basis for action, proposes a “Do No Harm to Future Generations” principle, and argues that an Interinstitutional Agreement is the most effective and feasible path forward.
It also sets out practical mechanisms—such as dedicated reporting, improved impact assessment, and structured cooperation across EU institutions—to ensure that long-term responsibility becomes part of everyday policymaking.
