Webinar “Advancing Sustainability in Jesuit Schools”

47

On November 18, from 15:00 to 16:30 CET, the Jesuit European Committee for Primary and Secondary Education (JECSE) and JESC will host an online webinar titled “Advancing Sustainability in Jesuit Schools – Designing the ecological transition as a common challenge”.

This webinar is an opportunity for educators, school leaders, students, Jesuit networks, and partners to discover a concrete, community-based approach to sustainability, and explore how ecological transformation can become a driver for educational renewal.

Sharing the experience

This event will present the first results of an innovative ecological transition project carried out in three Jesuit schools in Europe. This pilot initiative, part of the JESC Carbon Initiative (JCI), engaged more than 2,000 students, along with teachers, staff members, and families. The project explored how schools can reduce their environmental footprint while shaping a culture of sustainability rooted in responsibility and justice.

The webinar will feature contributions from representatives of the three pilot schools:

Speakers will share their schools’ experiences, including key insights, challenges encountered, and lessons learned. They will highlight how the project helped integrate sustainability into school operations, teaching practices, and community engagement. These testimonies will reflect different journeys and provide inspiration for other schools preparing to begin or strengthen their ecological transition.

Why this matters

Education plays a vital role in addressing today’s ecological challenges. Jesuit schools, inspired by the call of Laudato Si’ and the Universal Apostolic Preferences, are invited to care for our Common Home as an integral part of their mission. Ecological education is more than environmental awareness – it is an invitation to form young people who can shape a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world.
